Vinod Kambli has opened up on his relationship with childhood friend Sachin Tendulkar. The two recently met during the unveiling of Ramakanth Achrekar’s memorial. Kambli looked unwell but felt happy after meeting his pal.
Tendulkar and Kambli started their careers together and stitched important partnerships for their school. They also played for Team India and shared a dressing room in international cricket.
However, their bond turned sour in 2009 when Kambli accused Sachin of not helping him during his tough times.
Kambli has now broken his silence on the incident and revealed that Sachin has always helped him and paid for his two surgeries in 2013. Kambli said that he spoke against Sachin because he was frustrated.
“Sachin has always been there for me. He has supported me and even paid for my two surgeries. He told me how to play cricket and I made nine comebacks. We are cricketers and get hurt. We get hurt when we get out,” Kambli said in an interaction with Vicky Lalwani.
“It came in my mind that Sachin didn’t help. I was frustrated and I called him. Our childhood friendship came forward,” he added.
Kambli was the first Indian cricketer to score two consecutive double-centuries. He played his last Test for India in 1996, while his final fifty-over game was in 2000.
In 17 Tests, he amassed 1084 runs at an average of 54.20. Kambli played 104 ODIs and accumulated 2477 runs at an average of 32.59.
