The Virginia Tech basketball program picked up a key transfer in Hysier Miller during the offseason to further bolster its 2024-25 backcourt. Just weeks before season’s start, however, the guard is off the roster.

The Hokies wouldn’t go into detail on that dismissal, citing only “circumstances prior to his enrollment.” Most believe they know the cause!

Miller was previously a member of the Temple Owls program where he averaged 15.9 points and 4.0 assists a night.

While there, the team was flagged by US Integrity, a gambling watchdog company, for suspicious activity regarding a game against UAB.

The Blazers entered as 2.5-point favorites. The line crept up to -8 before tipoff. No injuries were reported on either side. There was no justification for the massive swing!

UAB would cover and more in a 100-72 blowout. Miller scored eight points on 33% shooting.

It was his lone single-digit performance in an 18-game stretch between January 20th and the end of the conference tournament. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not!

As it turns out, it wasn’t the first unusual incident for the Owls last season. US Integrity had been watching Temple “for a while.”

No suspensions were made as the team continued to employ the same lineup over the rest of the year, but an NCAA investigation was opened.

That probe is still ongoing, and Pat Forde of Sports Illustrated says “new information came to light earlier this month.”

We don’t know if Hysier Miller played a part in potential point shaving due to Virginia Tech basketball’s vague response on the situation. One thing is for sure – the timing isn’t ideal!

The Hokies are set to kick off the regular season on November 4th against Delaware State.
