NEWBURY — The Edgewood girls golf team made history on Monday.
The Warriors qualified to the Division II district tournament for the first time in school history after placing second in the sectional at Punderson State Park Golf Course.
Edgewood finished with a 359, which three strokes behind winner Ravenna Southeast in the team standings.
“This means everything,” Warriors coach Christina Fischer said. “We were happy when Annie [Johnston] advanced as an individual [to the district]. But our kids were super-dedicated on [Monday].”
Chagrin Falls posted third with a score of 378 and Orange checked in fourth at 380.
The top four teams advanced to the district.
Avery Vencill led the Warriors with an 41-39-80. Annie Johnston shot a 41-42-83; Zoe Naus, 40-43-84 and Rylee McCumber a 58-54-112.
Vencill, Johnston and Naus were all in the top six in scoring overall.
“These kids have put in so much time,” Fischer said. “I hope the younger kids see the work ethic involved.”
The four individuals not on a qualifying team to reach the district were: Bristol senior Addison Williams with a 40-42-82 and sophomore Anistyn Williams, 44-43-87; Independence Macey McGhee, 41-43-84 and Kirtland sophomore Maggie Kothera, 44-47-91.
The Warriors are scheduled to compete in the district tournament Oct. 2 at Good Park Golf Course in Akron.
“We’re going to have a practice round at our home course [Village Green], another challenging course and go to Good Park for a practice round,” Fischer said. “We want them to stay loose and focused. This is what it’s all about.”
FEATHER FALLS SHORT AT SECTIONAL
Mason Feather missed out on an individual spot in the D-II district tournament during Monday’s sectional tournament.
The Edgewood senior fired a 39-40-79 at Quail Hollow Country Club.
The top three individuals not on a qualifying team who qualified to the district were: West Geauga freshman Dylan Phillips with a 35-37-72; Lakeview senior Jason Demonica, 38-38-76 and Hawken junior Kevin Dang 38-40-78.
The Warriors fired a team total of 354 for eighth place.
“Each player had that one bad hole,” Edgewood coach Jim Lamson said. “We weren’t clean as we needed to be, but I’m proud of their efforts.”
Pymatuning Valley posted sixth place with a 349.
Sophomore Wyatt Karbacka and freshman Rylan Compan led the Lakers with an 84. Karbacka scored a 41-43, while Compan notched sides of 42.
“The Lakers golf team had a great year of growth this year,” coach Jeff Compan said. “We are a very young team with our top four players being three sophomores and a freshman. We are excited about the future, and the fact that we finished second in our league [Northeastern Athletic Conference] and battled state-qualifier Badger so close this year.”
Jefferson checked in with a team score of 391.
Sophomore Tristan Gilman carded a 45-46-91 to lead the Falcons.
“I am happy with how my players improved and gained valuable experience this season,” Jefferson coach Scott Barber said.
Conneaut had just two competitors. Freshman Brady Morrison registered a 57-55-112.
Chagrin Falls won the sectional tournament with a 323.
Saint John is slated to play in the D-III sectional tournament on Wednesday at Riverview Golf Course in Newton Falls.
Geneva, Lakeside and Madison are scheduled to play the D-I sectional tournament next Monday at Quail Hollow.
