Washington County Department of Business and Economic Development Supports Business Community Amid Opening of 35-Foot Channel at Fort McHenry – Washington County

Date:

HAGERSTOWN, MD (April 26, 2024) The Washington County Department of Business and Economic Development is proud to announce its commitment to assisting the Washington County business community in light of the opening of the 35-foot channel at Fort McHenry for vessel departures.

The U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port of Baltimore has declared the opening of the Fort McHenry Limited Access Channel, starting Thursday, April 25, until 6 am on Monday, April 29, or Tuesday, April 30 in the event of weather-related transit impacts.  This channel, like others of similar depth, will be clearly marked with lighted navigation aids and will permit transit solely under the discretion of the Coast Guard.

Jonathan Horowitz, Director of the Washington County, MD Department of Business and Economic Development, stated “The primary objective during this four-day period is to facilitate the departure of ships that have been docked within the Port of Baltimore since the March 26 incident, ensuring smooth and safe transitions.”

Following April 29 or April 30, access to this specific channel will be suspended until approximately May 10.  Meanwhile, the three other temporary channels currently operational (the 20-, 14-, and 11-foot deep channels) will remain available.  Commercial vessels are encouraged to utilize these alternative channels to avoid disrupting vessel traffic reliant on the 35-foot deep channel.

“We understand the importance of the Fort McHenry Limited Access Channel to our local economy and the businesses that rely on maritime activities,” stated Jonathan Horowitz.  “Our team is here to offer guidance and assistance to ensure that businesses can capitalize on the opportunities present by this channel opening.”

The Washington County Department of Business and Economic Development encourages businesses to reach out for support and guidance as they adapt to the new opportunities arising from the opening of the 35-foot channel at Fort McHenry. For more information and assistance, please contact Brittany Marshall of the Governor’s Office at [email protected]; or you may contact Linda Spence, Business Specialist of the Washington County Department of Business and Economic Development at [email protected].

The Department of Business and Economic Development team is committed to fostering economic growth and prosperity in our community, and in the region!
