It was another chamber of commerce day for the Huskies as they took the field for day five of fall camp with temps in the mid-70s and a slight breeze. There was more scrimmaging than we’ve seen in previous days and there definitely was a ramp up in competition.
There was a good number of Huskies working on the side today, including Denzel Boston, Landen Hatchett, Kamren Fabiculanan, Tristan Dunn, Darren Barkins and Isaiah Ward. Rashid Wallace was also missing from practice and we didn’t get a look at him on the sidelines either, so just something to keep an eye on.
As far as the first team, the Huskies were led up front by the same group along the offensive line with Drew Azzopardi (RT) and Soane Faasolo (LT) at tackle, Gaard Memmelaar (LG) and Enokk Vimahi (RG) at guard. D’Angalo Titialii was the first team center after Zachary Henning took the reps there on Sunday.
Will Rogers took all of the snaps with the first unit and with Boston not taking part in team drills, Jeremiah Hunter was his main target. The two combined for a couple of nice hookups including one of the sidelines where Hunter needed to get to the sticks on third and long and was able to tap his feet for the first down.
Rogers made good use of tight end Quentin Moore in the middle of the field and the big target notched several first downs on his catches.
He also connected twice with Giles Jackson for touchdowns on back-to-back plays, first finding the veteran wideout on an in-breaking route for a five yard score and then hitting him in a jump ball in the back of the endzone for another score. Both were in spite of great coverage by Jordan Shaw
Overall, Rogers looked like he was on for much of practice and there didn’t seem to be a lot of issues.
Demond Williams made a couple of nice throws in his reps with the second team, including one to Audric Harris who got open on the sideline vs. Thaddeus Dixon and Rogers throw a pin-point pass for yet another first down.
Maximus McCree handled left tackle duties with the second team and looked good in team drills, but one a drill between the offensive and defensive lines where the defensive linemen twisted and stunted, he did struggle with picking things up and drew some extra coaching from Brennan Carroll on the side.
Defensively, Sebastian Valdez and Jacob Bandes were with the first team as the interior defensive linemen, but Logan Sagapolu and Elinneus Davis also got some reps inside as well.
With Fabiculanan out, Cameron Broussard took a lot of reps at safety and made a nice diving tip of a pass intended in the endzone for Moore.
Carson Bruener added a pick of Williams late in the practice as the freshman quarterback tried to get the ball over him to an open receiver. The senior linebacker leapt in the air and brought it down easily, showing soft hands and great awareness on the play.
Washington will return to the practice field tomorrow at 10 am for their sixth practice of fall camp.
