Oct. 2—The West High tennis team won the Region IV Tournament team title Tuesday, the school’s seventh consecutive region championship.
The Eagles were powered to the victory by individual titles in the girls singles and doubles brackets as well as in mixed doubles.
In the girls singles title match, West’s Lana Cebrian cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over South’s Veronica Bogdziewicz. The West girls doubles team of Alice Kim and Sarah Kim topped Chugiak’s Mary Jo Landon and Timber Fleischhacker 6-4, 6-2 in the finals.
In mixed doubles, West’s team of Noah Marx and Lavinia Li dug out of a one-set hole to take the title. Chugiak’s Jack Latteier and Meadow Lewis won the first set 6-4, but Marx and Li took the second set 6-1 and won the third set tiebreaker 10-6.
In boys singles, Service’s Ulysses Escobar won over West’s Jude Cebrian to earn the region title. Cebrian won the first set 7-5 but trailed 4-0 in the second set when he retired due to injury.
In what was the most competitive match of the finals, Dimond’s Jack Debenham and Spike Clark topped West’s Henry Carr and Jack Boots 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9) to win the boys doubles competition.
The state tennis tournament runs Oct. 10-12 at Alaska Club East.
