Where the Wildcats stand in college basketball player rankings

Date:

As the 2024-25 college basketball season draws near, we’re seeing various outlets release their player rankings for the upcoming campaign.

One of Mark Pope’s former players, BYU transfer forward Jaxson Robinson, joined him in Lexington and is now being regarded as one of the best in college hoops. Robinson was the Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year a season ago, and he’s expected to be a top-50ish player in college basketball this year.

First, ESPN, in a ranking of the top 100 players, has him at No. 49. Here’s what they wrote on the incoming star.

“After withdrawing from the NBA draft, Robinson (14.2 PPG) followed Mark Pope to Kentucky, where he’ll join a group of transfers aiming to make the Wildcats competitive in their first year without John Calipari. Robinson has to be more consistent in Lexington (he shot just 30% from 3 in Big 12 play last season), but his best performances — see: 18 points, 4-for-9 from beyond the arc in a win over Kansas in 2023-24 — showed he can be one of the top players in his new conference,” ESPN noted in a column written by both Jeff Borzello and Myron Medcalf.

On3 also released a recent ranking, having Robinson placed at No. 49 out of 125 players.

Former Wake Forest center Andrew Carr also cracked that list at No. 81. Those were the only Cats named throughout both, but with numerous experienced players — namely Lamont Butler and Koby Brea — they should have a good group that can play at a high level.
