Bain & Company global technology and cloud services practice chairman David Crawford joins Market Domination to discuss AI’s potential impact on the labor market and the software sector.
Crawford believes that AI “presents opportunities for people to be more productive.” He continues, “I’m an optimist. I’ve been around the Valley long enough to have seen a few of these technical disruptions, and almost every one had predictions of doomsday. I actually think it allows people to find new and higher value activities, but there will be dislocations along the way.”
While some investors are concerned about the software sector’s future given the emergence of generative AI, Crawford believes it will provide both a “pretty big opportunity” as well as a threat. He explains, “The capacity to accelerate your software development pace for both software companies themselves and for enterprises who are doing some level of software coding internally is extraordinary.”
“To get value out of this, you have to have people doing their work in a different way. And so that requires business diagnostic change programs, all the things that you have to do to sort of get value out of it. It’s not like cloud where you can just deploy the technology and get value,” Crawford adds.
