Just a few minutes before SMU basketball’s first ACC meeting with No. 4 Duke, the Blue Devils announced a key absence for Saturday’s showdown.
Duke coach Jon Scheyer didn’t travel with the team to Dallas due to illness. Associate head coach Chris Carrawell took Scheyer’s spot on the bench as acting head coach at Moody Coliseum.

Scheyer has led Duke to a 65-20 record over the last three years, helping the program open the 2024-25 season with an 11-2 mark. According to the Charlotte Observer’s Steve Wiseman, Scheyer exhibited flu symptoms and couldn’t travel Friday with the rest of the team.
Scheyer is expected to return to the bench for Duke’s home game against Pitt on Tuesday.
