Williams lauds ‘top class’ Bellamy after Allen’s Wales recall

Date:

Swansea City head coach Luke Williams believes Wales are on to something special under Craig Bellamy following the recall of Joe Allen to the international setup.

Swans midfielder Allen retired from Wales duty in February 2023 but has been included in Bellamy’s 25-man squad for upcoming Nations League matches against Iceland and Montenegro.

Allen is one of four Swansea players included in Wales’ senior side this month – with Ben Cabango, Liam Cullen and Ollie Cooper also selected by Bellamy.

And Williams heaped praise on Bellamy for the way he has kept in regular contact with the Swans since replacing Robert Page as Wales boss.

“I’m just so pleased for Joe because he’s had some injury troubles in the last couple of seasons, but he’s such a fantastic football player and such a fantastic guy,” Williams told BBC Radio Wales.

Williams added: “I’m really happy to be a part of this and support him, I think the national team is on to something really fantastic. I’m happy more of our players can be involved in that.

“Craig has been absolutely top. When you talk about top level international footballers, that’s one [Bellamy] talking about another [Allen] in that conversation.

“So he’s been first class. The level of understanding and appreciation he has for the player and for what we need as a club has been exceptional.”
