Winner boys golf sweeps Region 3A titles, qualifies for state tournament

Oct. 1—MITCHELL — Led by a strong performance from Karson Keiser, the Winner boys golf team will be fighting for a state championship.

The Warriors swept the Region 3A boys golf championship on Monday at Lakeview Golf Course, posting a cumulative score of 325 to win the team title by 23 strokes over runner-up Parkston. Chamberlain came in third place with a score of 350. The top-three teams and the top-17 golfers earned spots in the Class A state tournament.

Keiser claimed the individual golf title with a round of 5-over 76 on Lakeview’s par-71 layout, carding four birdies. Brody Calhoon finished in fourth for the Warriors with an 81, while Carter Craven and Landon Calhoon shot rounds of 84 to share seventh place.

Chamberlain’s Chase McQuirk came home in second place with a 6-over 77. Teammate Cannon Speer finished in third with an 8-over 79, and both Parkston’s Landon Weber and Kelby Neugebauer finished in a tie for fifth with rounds of 83.

Also qualifying individually for the state tournament among area athletes include Mount Vernon/Plankinton’s Trysten Eide (T7, 84), Chamberlain’s London Houska (T11, 88), Parkston’s Cohen Bowar (T13, 89), MVP’s Hudson Schmidt (T13, 89) and Payton Nedved (15th, 91), Winner’s Ryder Halligan (T16, 92) and MVP’s Mason Karst (T16, 92).

Behind the state qualifying teams, Mount Vernon/Plankinton finished in fourth with a score of 356, Redfield came in fifth (371), and Todd County placed sixth (474) for the tournament.

The Class A state boys golf championship will begin on Monday, Oct. 7, at Central Valley Golf Course in Hartford.
