MADISON — The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) announced recently that about 1.4 million people, according to AAA, will be traveling this weekend on Wisconsin roads and highways for the Fourth of July holiday, and travelers should check ahead on travel conditions before starting their trips.
According to the release, WisDOT also reminded travelers to drive safely and expect slower traffic through construction zones along major travel corridors. Peak travel times this week are expected between 2 and 7 p.m. today and from 2 to 8 p.m. on Sunday.
“Wisconsinites are expected to travel in record numbers for the Fourth of July weekend, so we urge drivers to keep their eyes up and speeds down,” WisDOT Secretary Craig Thompson said. “Together, we can make a difference on our roads with safe driving behaviors. Buckle up, drive sober and be courteous to other motorists. These simple steps can help save lives and prevent crashes on Wisconsin roads.”
While most construction work will pause during the Fourth of July holiday weekend to open up as many lanes of traffic as possible, there still are significant projects that could impact travel. According to the WisDOT, travelers can access real-time travel conditions information and road construction information before heading out on the roads by visiting 511wi.gov, downloading the 511 Wisconsin app, following @511WI on X (formerly Twitter), or by calling 511.
“Alerts and updates provided via these sites are not intended for use while driving,” said the release. “When driving, your focus should always be on the road ahead.”
