Wolves vs Newcastle: Preview, predictions and lineups

Date:

Wolverhampton Wanderers host Newcastle United in the Premier League on Sunday as both sides return to action after the September international break.

The Old Gold have made a disappointing start to the 2024/25 season from an admittedly tough opening three fixtures. A trip to Arsenal ended in defeat before Gary O’Neill’s side were hit for six on home soil against Chelsea. They managed their first point of the campaign before the international period, earning a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest.

Newcastle are flying in comparison. A ten-man victory over Southampton on the opening day was followed by a 1-1 draw with Bournemouth, with Alexander Isak scoring his first goal of the season in victory over Tottenham Hotspur last time out. With no European football to concern them, Newcastle could be in for an exciting season.

Here is 90min’s guide to Wolves vs Newcastle this weekend.

Wolves team news

The international break has not been particularly kind to Wolves, who saw Rayan Ait-Nouri and Mario Lemina withdraw from the Algeria and Gabon squads respectively with knocks. Yerson Mosquera was also stretchered off in Colombia‘s clash with Argentina.

Enzo Gonzalez, Sasa Kalajdzic and Boubacar Traore are all sidelined as well, with the latter sustaining a nasty long-term injury during the Carabao Cup win over Burnley in late August.

Late summer signing Andre could earn a first start in midfield, especially if Lemina is injured, and Carlos Forbs could also be involved for the first time after his loan switch from Ajax.

Wolves predicted lineup vs Newcastle

Wolves predicted lineup vs Newcastle (4-4-1-1): Johnstone; Semedo, Toti, Dawson, Ait-Nouri; Bellegarde, J. Gomes, Lemina, Hwang; Cunha; Larsen.

Newcastle team news

Newcastle’s injury list never seems to shorten and the Magpies are still without a host of players for the journey to Molineux on Sunday.

Joe Willock and Callum Wilson are edging closer to returns but remains sidelined, with long-term absentees Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles and Lewis Miley all still on the treatment table. Emil Krafth pulled out of the Sweden squad with a knock but should be fit against Wolves.

Sandro Tonali could earn a first Premier League start since his betting suspension ended, while the front three of Isak, Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes is likely to start again.

Newcastle predicted lineup vs Wolves

Newcastle predicted lineup vs Wolves (4-3-3): Pope; Trippier, Krafth, Burn, Livramento; Tonali, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Gordon, Isak, Barnes.

Wolves vs Newcastle score prediction

Wolves’ underwhelming start to the campaign won’t fill supporters with confidence for Newcastle’s visit. The Midlands side haven’t beaten the Magpies since October 2021 and have looked ropey in defence in the opening weeks of the campaign.

Newcastle haven’t blown teams away this term but they have found a way to win in difficult circumstances against Southampton and Spurs. We fancy them to sneak three points at Molineux, with their dynamic attacking triumvirate firing them to victory.
