Women’s Basketball Cruises Past John Jay, 84-47 – Wesleyan University

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Wesleyan women’s basketball team turned in their best performance of the season on Monday night as the Cardinals toppled John Jay 84-47 on the road to snap a four-game losing streak. Wesleyan improves to 5-7 on the season while the Bloodhounds drop to 2-10.
 
Even in the 37-point road win, the first quarter was competitive throughout, with Wesleyan opening a 11-6 lead before John Jay cut the deficit to one. Two Kayla Genda ’26 free throws with just over two minutes left in the frame were the last points scored for either team as the Cardinals led 15-12 after one.
 
The Bloodhounds kept the score close, even taking a lead nearing the midway point of the second quarter, before the Cardinals went on a 14-1 run over the final 5:06 of the period. Ali Murphy ’27 subbed into the game and made a key impact, scoring her first four career points with four rebounds and a blocked shot in the 13-point swing heading into halftime. Meghan Kirck ’28 also hit two three-pointers in the run while Felicia Fongemie ’27 capped a 12-point first half with four points over the final 5+ minutes.
 
The Cardinals poured it on in the third quarter, scoring 16 of the first 18 points of the third quarter to take a 49-23 lead and capping what was a 30-3 Wesleyan run over a span of just over nine minutes of game time between the second and third quarters.
 
The lead swelled to as many as 36 points in the third quarter with Olivia Quinn ’26 playing a big role in the frame, scoring nine points with three assists. Wesleyan emptied the bench in the fourth and led by as many as 46 points before closing out the 37-point road win.
 
Wesleyan shot over 50 percent from the floor and from three in the second half, going 17-for-32 from the floor and 6-of-11 from three while also hitting 11-of-12 free throw attempts.
 
The 84 points scored is the second-most points scored in a game this season for Wesleyan and the first time the Cardinals scored 70+ in a game since a 88-78 win at St. Mary’s College back on November 16 (nine games ago).
 
Wesleyan dished out a season-high 24 assists on 30 made baskets while the Cardinals hit a season-high 11 three-pointers.
 
Quinn flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 14 points, eight rebounds, and a career-high nine assists as she picked apart the John Jay zone defense from the top of the key all night.
 
Kirck went 4-of-6 from three-point territory, totaling 14 points, five assists, and three rebounds in 33 minutes. Fongemie scored 12 of her game-high 17 points in the first half as she finished 7-for-10 from the floor and 3-of-5 from deep.
 
Tori DaCosta ’25 finished with 13 points and eight rebounds in just 13 minutes. Murphy came off the bench and tallied six points and seven rebounds in 12 minutes.
 
Wesleyan returns to action on Friday night as the Cardinals open NESCAC play with a trip to Williams for a 7 PM tip in Williamstown.
