China is set to claim the title of the world’s largest artificial island airport with the upcoming Dalian Jinzhou Bay International Airport, surpassing Hong Kong’s airport. Spanning 20 square kilometres, it will feature four runways and a 900,000 square-metre passenger terminal.
Hong Kong International Airport, spanning 12.48 square kilometres, and Kansai International Airport, at 10 square kilometres, are currently the largest artificial island airports. China’s Dalian Jinzhou Bay International Airport will surpass both to become the world’s largest artificial island airport.
The massive airport is designed to handle 80 million passengers annually through 540,000 flights. It will open in phases, with the first phase set for 2035. The Dalian Jinzhou Bay International Airport will support the existing Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport, which is facing passenger traffic issues. Built nearly a century ago, the current airport has undergone multiple expansions and reached its maximum capacity.
Dalian, the port city of the Liaoning Province, is known for its strategic location and proximity to popular destinations like Japan and South Korea.
China’s aviation industry is poised to surpass the US as the world’s largest air travel market. Officials estimate that 450 airports will be required by 2035 to meet the growing demand.
