World’s ‘most-popular’ YouTuber and Amazon sued over reality show, here’s what the complaints are – Times of India

Date:

YouTube superstar MrBeast is facing a lawsuit alleging unsafe working conditions and misleading representations about the odds of winning his new Amazon reality show. Five anonymous contestants have filed a lawsuit against MrBeast and his company, claiming sexual harassment, inadequate wages and benefits, and misrepresentation of the chances of winning the $5 million grand prize.MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, is the world’s most-popular YouTuber with over 310 million followers.

What the complaint says

MRB2024 (a company owned by “MrBeast,” i.e. Jimmy Donaldson), Amazon and production company Off One’s Base are the defendants named in the complaint filed in Los Angeles. The show was announced in March by Amazon, which said it would premiere on Prime Video.
The lawsuit alleges that the multimillion-dollar company behind YouTube’s most popular channel failed to provide minimum wages, overtime pay, uninterrupted meal breaks and rest time for competitors — whose “work on the show was the entertainment product” sold by MrBeast.
A spokesperson for MrBeast has denied the allegations.

What is “Beast Games” reality show all about

The reality show, “Beast Games,” was touted as the “biggest reality competition” and attracted thousands of contestants. However, the lawsuit claims that participants were misled about their chances of winning, as the number of contestants was much higher than advertised.
Donaldson’s “Beast Games” is said to be the “biggest reality competition.” It was supposed to put the US-based content creator in front of audiences beyond the YouTube platform where his record 316 million subscribers routinely watch his challenges that often carry lavish gifts of direct cash.
In addition to unsafe working conditions and misleading representations, the lawsuit alleges that production staff created a toxic work environment for women, including sexual harassment. The lawsuit also claims that contestants were denied adequate food, medical care, and rest.
MrBeast’s team is also accused of misclassifying contestants’ employment status to receive a state tax credit. The contestants are seeking an order requiring MrBeast to institute workplace reforms and pay all owed wages.
