WTC Points Table: Updated World Test Championship Standings After New Zealand’s Historic Pune Win Over India | IND vs NZ | Cricket News Today

Date:

New Zealand beat India in the second Test match in Pune to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in their three-match series. Here’s the updated World Test Championship points table following the second IND-NZ Test.

New Zealand chose to bat first in this match, as they aimed to create history after winning the first Test in Bengaluru last week. A solid start from the top-order helped them to 259 in the first innings, in spite of Washington Sundar’s 7-59.

India’s time with the bat then unfolded in horrific fashion. After losing captain Rohit Sharma early, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal put on 49 for the second wicket. However, the rest of the order collapsed one after another, to 156 all out as Mitchell Santner took 7-53.

New Zealand skipper Tom Latham then led the way with 86 as they posted 255, setting India a mammoth 359 for victory. On day three, Yashasvi Jaiswal sparked hopes of an improbable chase with a belligerent 77, but it was only a matter of time until they were bowled out, eventually handing New Zealand victory by 113 runs.

The win sealed the series for New Zealand, marking their first-ever Test series win in India, and making them the first team since 2012 to defeat the Indians in a Test series in their own backyard.

Updated WTC points table: New Zealand move into fourth place

The historic victory means New Zealand’s points percentage (PCT) has gone from 44.44 to 50.00, and has pushed them up one spot to fourth in the table. They have the same number of points as Sri Lanka (60), but Sri Lanka’s points percentage is 55.56.

India remain in top spot, but their PCT has dropped from 68.05 to 62.82, meaning Australia in second place are almost level with them. Every setback for India makes the Border-Gavaskar Trophy later this year gain even more significance, with little room for error if they want to make it to the WTC final next June.
