With their latest victory, the Yorktown Patriots completed the pre-winter-break portion of the boys basketball team’s schedule with a 7-1 overall record.
Win number seven came on the road Friday night (Dec. 20) by a 59-57 score over the Marshall Statesmen in the first Liberty District action of the campaign for the Patriots.
The game was a seesaw contest in the first half, with two ties and seven lead changes.
Yorktown took the lead for good at 30-28 late in the second quarter on a three-point play by Jack Rubin. The Patriots led 35-30 at halftime and 45-41 after three periods.
After building an 11-point fourth-quarter lead, Marshall rallied in the final stages. The Statesmen had one final possession after Yorktown missed two foul shots, but did not get off a decent shot.
The victory was the fifth in a row for Yorktown.
Brendan Pilot made six three-pointers and led Yorktown in scoring with 20 points to go with four rebounds. Jack Coulam made three threes and scored 18; Rubin had nine points and five rebounds; Austin Barbieri scored eight, had 14 rebounds, four assists and a steal; Nicholas Senkus made a three-pointer, scored four points and had four assists; Sam Roosa had two assists and a steal off the bench; and Walton Butler had three rebounds off the bench.
Yorktown will play games Dec. 27-28 at the Ron Eagle Classic at Middletown High School in Maryland. Yorktown coach Joe Keimig’s brother, Joe, is the coach of the Middletown team.
Last year, that tournament was played at Yorktown, with the Patriots losing to Middletown by three points.
This year, Yorktown and Middleton will face off Saturday (Dec. 28) at 3 p.m.
